Key Details

Closing date - 11.59 pm British Summer Time (BST), 31 August 2026

Eligible entrants - Residents of the United Kingdom and the 50 United States and District of Columbia, aged 18 or over.

Please read these terms before entering. By submitting an entry, you confirm that you meet the eligibility requirements and agree to these terms and conditions.

1. Promoter

The promoter is Lights On, Still Scared (the “Promoter”). The competition is administered by Karen Swanston and Graeme Milne. Questions about the competition should be submitted through the contact form on the Lights On, Still Scared website.

2. Eligibility

The competition is free to enter and is open to residents of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are aged 18 or over at the time of entry. It is void where prohibited by law.

Residents of US territories and possessions, including Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands, are not eligible for this competition.

The Promoter’s employees, contractors, judging panel, and their immediate family or household members may not enter.

Only one entry per person is permitted. No purchase or payment is necessary. Internet access is required.

3. Competition period

Entries open when the competition is published on the Lights On, Still Scared website and social-media pages.
The closing date is 11.59 pm BST on 31 August 2026. Entries received after the closing date will not be considered. The Promoter is not responsible for entries that are delayed, incomplete, corrupted, misdirected or not received because of technical problems.

4. How to enter

Entrants must visit the contact page on the Lights On, Still Scared website and complete the contact form with accurate contact details.

The message must begin with the words “T-SHIRT COMPETITION” and must then provide a true ghost story, paranormal experience or unusual encounter. The story may describe the entrant’s own experience or a family story that the entrant has permission to share.

Entries must be submitted through the website contact form. Entries sent only as social-media comments or private messages will not be accepted.

5. Entry requirements

The entrant must believe the submitted account to be true and must have the right to submit it. The entry must be the entrant’s own written account and must not be copied from a published source or another person without permission.

An entry must not contain unlawful, defamatory, threatening, discriminatory, sexually explicit or deliberately misleading material. It must not infringe copyright, privacy, confidentiality or any other rights.

Entrants should avoid identifying private individuals without their permission. The Promoter may anonymise names or identifying details before publication or broadcast.

The Promoter may disqualify an entry that does not comply with these requirements or where there are reasonable grounds to suspect fraud, impersonation or an attempt to manipulate the competition.

6. Judging

This is a judged storytelling competition and not a random prize draw. Eligible entries will be reviewed by Karen Swanston and Graeme Milne.

Entries will be judged using the following criteria:
  • Originality and distinctiveness of the experience — 30%
  • Quality and clarity of the storytelling — 30%
  • Atmosphere, interest and impact — 20%
  • Suitability for inclusion in the Lights On, Still Scared podcast — 20%

The entry with the highest score will be the overall winner. The next three highest-scoring entries will be the runners-up. If entries are tied, the entry with the higher storytelling score will rank first; if they remain tied, the judges will make a joint decision based on overall podcast suitability. The judges’ decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into about the judging outcome.

7. Prizes

There are four prize packages in total: one overall winner’s prize and three runner-up prizes.

The overall winner will receive:

  • First choice of one of the four competition T-shirt designs: Ghostly Dog, Spooky Mermaid, Phantom Highwayman or Spooky Monk;
  • a signed copy of Graeme Milne’s latest published book available at the competition closing date; and
  • the winning story featured in a future episode of Lights On, Still Scared.

Each of the three runners-up will receive:
  • one of the three remaining T-shirt designs; and
  • their story featured in a future episode of Lights On, Still Scared.

The overall winner chooses a design first. The runners-up will then be offered the remaining designs in their final ranked order. T-shirts are subject to the standard sizes made available by the manufacturer. The Promoter will make reasonable efforts to provide each winner’s requested available size but cannot guarantee a size that the manufacturer does not stock.

Each T-shirt has an approximate retail value of US$35.99. The signed book has the publisher’s retail price in force at the closing date. Podcast inclusion has no cash value. Prizes are not transferable, cannot be exchanged and have no cash alternative.

8. Winner notification

The Promoter intends to contact the four selected winners using the email address or other contact details supplied on the website form within 14 days after the closing date.

A selected winner must respond within 14 days of the first notification and provide the information reasonably required to verify eligibility and deliver the prize, including a delivery address and T-shirt size. A winner will never be asked to pay a fee to claim or receive a prize.

If a selected winner cannot be contacted, does not respond in time, is found to be ineligible or cannot accept the prize, the Promoter may offer the prize to the next highest-scoring eligible entrant.

9. Delivery, manufacturer fulfilment and customs

The Promoter will arrange standard delivery of the prizes. Prizes may arrive in more than one parcel and may be dispatched directly by the T-shirt manufacturer or another delivery or fulfilment provider.
For a winner in the United States, the T-shirt may be sent directly by a US-based manufacturer using domestic delivery. If the overall winner is in the United States, the signed book may be sent separately from the United Kingdom.

Standard delivery and any customs or import charges arranged by the Promoter will be paid by the Promoter. Winners will not be asked to pay a fee to receive a prize. If a carrier unexpectedly requests payment from a winner, the winner should not pay immediately and should contact the Promoter through the website contact form.
The Promoter aims to dispatch prizes within 30 days after a winner has confirmed the required delivery information. Delivery time may vary by destination and is outside the Promoter’s direct control.

10. Permission to use submitted stories

By submitting a story through the contact form, the entrant gives the Promoter a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free permission to reproduce, edit for length or clarity, adapt, publish, perform, record and discuss that story on the Lights On, Still Scared podcast, website and associated social-media channels.

The four winning stories will be selected for future podcast inclusion. Other submitted stories may also be featured in future episodes even if they do not win a prize. Submission does not guarantee that a story will be used or specify when it will appear.

Entrants retain ownership of their original written stories. Where reasonably practicable, the Promoter may identify an entrant by first name and general location. Entrants who require anonymity should state this clearly in their entry. The Promoter may change or remove identifying details to protect privacy, clarity or programme length.

11. Publicity and winner information

The Promoter may announce the winners and may use the winning entries in reasonable post-competition publicity, including the podcast, website and social-media channels.

Where required to demonstrate that a valid award took place, the Promoter may make available a winner’s surname, county or state, and winning entry. A winner may object to or request a reduction in the amount of personal information published by contacting the Promoter. The Promoter may still provide required information to a regulator if challenged.

12. Personal information

Personal information supplied by entrants will be used to administer and judge the competition, contact winners, arrange prize delivery, publish or broadcast stories as permitted, and comply with legal or regulatory obligations.

A winner’s name, delivery address, email address, telephone number, T-shirt size and other necessary delivery details may be shared with the T-shirt manufacturer, postal operator, courier or fulfilment provider solely to fulfil and deliver the prize.

Personal information will be handled in accordance with the privacy information provided on the Lights On, Still Scared website. Entrants should not include unnecessary sensitive personal information in their stories.

13. Changes, cancellation and liability

The Promoter will not change the closing date or material terms unless circumstances outside its reasonable control make this unavoidable and the change can be made fairly without disadvantaging entrants.
If a stated prize becomes unavailable for reasons outside the Promoter’s reasonable control, the Promoter may provide a reasonable alternative of equal or greater value. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded.
To the extent permitted by law, the Promoter is not responsible for losses caused by events outside its reasonable control, failures of third-party websites or delivery providers, or an entrant’s failure to provide accurate information.

14. Facebook and Instagram

This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by or associated with Facebook or Instagram. By entering, participants release Facebook and Instagram from responsibility connected with the promotion to the extent permitted by law. Entrants provide their information to the Promoter, not to Facebook or Instagram.

15. Governing law

These terms and conditions are governed by the laws of Scotland, subject to any mandatory consumer rights or protections that apply in an entrant’s place of residence. The Scottish courts will have jurisdiction, except where an entrant is entitled by mandatory law to bring proceedings in another competent court.
